North Lancashire Football: College shock Bentham as Caton go top

College took the lead in the first half, much against the run of play, when Pietr Piesteel netted from close in.

Bentham, who had only lost once previously, looked to be out of sorts in the first half but they did improve in the second and started peppering the College goal without any luck until Gary Taylor scored a goal out of nothing.

It looked at this stage as though Bentham would go on and win the game but the rugged College defence stood firm.

In one rare attack College were awarded a penalty with just 10 minutes remaining from which Gary Davies scored to give his team a surprise lead.

Bentham threw everything at the College side in the remaining minutes and missed a lot of chances, none better than in the 90th minute when a header went wide of an open goal in the last action of the day.

Bottom team Trimpell and Bare travelled to play Bowerham, fourth from bottom, in a six-pointer at the bottom of the table.

The game was played at a good pace by two teams who both wanted to win and at the end it was goals from Aidan Dunphy and Sam Sandham that won it for the Trimpell side, Luke Foxcroft scored the Bowerham goal.

This defeat brings Bowerham back into relegation contention along with five other teams.

Carnforth Rangers slipped up again when they lost 2-1 to Cartmel and District.

It looked in the early stages that Carnforth had one eye on the Lancashire Football Association Amateur Cup semi-final as they appeared to be just going through the motions and they paid for it.

Cartmel opened up a 2-0 lead with both goals coming from young Carl Airey before Carnforth responded with a goal from Cameron Holmes.

With 20 minutes remaining Carnforth were unable to breach the Cartmel defence again.

Marsh United, still in danger of relegation, faced a tough task when they entertained second placed Galgate.

Chances were few and far between with both defences well on top and a draw was probably the fairest result on the day as the game finished 0-0.

Caton United emerged as new leaders of the division after winning 3-0 away at Morecambe Royals.

In an error strewn first-half by the Royals Caton opened up a 3-0 lead with Nathan Jackson scoring all three goals as they dominated the game.

The Royals’ first half performance was their worst of the season so far as they never looked to be capable of breaking down the Caton side.

The second half saw a marked improvement by the Royals but the damage had been done in a poor first half defensive performance.

Storeys lost a tight game 1-0 to Ingleton with the only goal of the game was scored by the consistent Dan Tyrer.
