The Shrimps went in front against the run of play through Alan Goodall’s first half header but were pegged back by Scott Barrow’s stunner after the break.

The real drama came in the 93rd minute however as Mullin sent Joe Day the wrong way from 12 yards after Aaron Hayden had been penalised for a foul on Kevin Ellison.

The Exiles controlled long periods of the game as they chased a first win of the season but Morecambe did enough for a fourth straight win in all competitions.

Having gone behind after just 60 seconds seven days earlier at Yeovil The Shrimps made another slow start at Rodney Parade.

First Aaron Collins got in behind too easily with Barry Roche rushing out to save, the resultant corner from captain Mark Byrne being headed over by Lenell John-Lewis when he should have done better.

Scott Boden then found room in the area to bring a low save from Roche as the hosts continued to exploit holes in a slack Shrimps defence.

There was only 10 minutes on the clock when Collins tested Roche again from the edge of the area as the strugglers sensed a fast start.

It didn’t materialise but the Exiles kept coming, Roche beating away Byrne’s well struck shot from 20 yards on 24 minutes before having to dart from his goal to deny John-Lewis.

Against the run of play however it was The Shrimps who went in front with their first chance on 34 minutes.

In a carbon copy of his goal at Portsmouth Goodall beat his man at the near post to head home Devitt’s corner for his third of the season.

The goal rocked Rodney Parade but the home fans saw their side continue to make the running, Roche on hand to deny Barrow from a tight angle shortly before the break.

The hosts were again quickest out of the blocks in the second period but it was Morecambe who had the first real chance, Joe Day spilling Molyneux’s low free-kick with his defence scrambling clear.

The Shrimps had a huge chance to take real control on 64 minutes but wasted it.

Barkhuizen broke clear and fed sub Kevin Ellison in on goal but the veteran struggled to find his feet and saw his shot saved. Molyneux then arrived and curled a fine effort from 20 yards narrowly wide as the ball broke free.

The visitors were made to pay just three minutes later as Newport levelled, Barrow firing in a fine low shot from 25 yards beyond Roche.

The Shrimps were rocking as Newport chased a first win of the season, Roche helping Zak Ansah’s shot effort from the edge of the area round the post.

The expected onslaught didn’t materialise but despite a scrappy finale there was time for one final piece of drama.

Ellison broke in behind Hayden on the left side of the area and went down with referee Rob Lewis pointing to the spot deep into stoppage time.
