The 37-year-old has been sidelined since April after rupturing his Achilles in Morecambe’s defeat at Crewe Alexandra.

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley had admitted earlier this month that discussions were still ongoing and that, in the interim, Thompson could be used in other areas at the club.

An official announcement was made on Friday that everything had been signed and sealed with a possible return to action in time for Morecambe’s Christmas fixtures.

Thompson told Morecambe’s website: “When I suffered the injury I automatically feared the worst and when I got the confirmation of the rupture it felt like my world had fallen apart and that everything I had built over my career had been taken away in that moment.

“You touch on all aspects when you’re laid up not being able to move. Would I play again? Would I even have the option, never mind the opportunity?

“I had a consultation with the surgeon the following week and it was really positive, so immediately I knew I wanted to give it a go. If I decided not to I may have regretted it for the rest of my life.

“The day when all the lads came in after the season ended to discuss their futures, I had a long conversation with the gaffer, where everything from playing again to retirement was spoken about.

“I made it clear that I wanted to do everything I could to return, I just wanted a squad number. Something to aim towards.

“This is a unique club in the sense that we run with a small squad and there isn’t necessarily a place for a player with a long term injury, so I’m extremely thankful to everyone involved in giving me this opportunity.”

Bentley added; “Thommo’s a good person to have around the place.

“He knows this club inside out and this deal gives him an opportunity to get fit and in the meantime have a positive influence on other areas of our football club.”
