Morecambe's players should have plenty of credit for their performances

The Shrimps welcome Salford City to the Mazuma Stadium tonight (6.30pm), looking to build on last Saturday’s win at Barrow AFC.

That victory was Morecambe’s first in five and moved them back into the League Two play-off positions, within touching distance of the automatic promotion places.

After finishing last year with five wins in six, 2021 has been a bit more up and down with nine league matches bringing a hat-trick of victories, draws and defeats.

While the Shrimps are handily placed in the table, there has been the odd criticism at an apparent willingness to sit on a lead in some games, let their opponents have the ball and then counter.

Answering that observation, Adams was keen to highlight how his squad had adapted to training and playing under Covid-19 guidelines.

He said: “With how difficult it’s been in this period, I think we’re in a fabulous position.

“To be where we are, with the smallest budget in the league, and with players who have taken a 20 per cent wage cut, it’s a difficult situation and perhaps, sometimes, people don’t understand that.

“We’re getting the privilege of playing football and the players are working their socks off to have any income for themselves.

“We’ve been outside at training and then we can’t go inside to have a shower or anything like that.

“Instead, we’re stood outside in the pouring rain because we’ve been asked to play football and we’ve been asked to do our work within the protocols in place.

“We are stood outside for hours and hours, and then you’ll get someone complaining about a football player doing this or that.

“I hope people understand that we travel the length and breadth of the country to play football because we’ve been asked to.

“We’ve had to go to places with the highest Covid rate in the league – and we’ve had to travel down there, stay in a hotel and then play, all while observing the protocols.”
