Morecambe's incentive to break their EFL points record

With five games of the campaign remaining, the Shrimps sit fourth in the table with 66 points.

It’s already the second-highest total the club has achieved since promotion from non-league in 2007, bettered only by the 73 posted in 2009/10.

Adams has previously spoken of wanting to beat that total as the Shrimps seek a first promotion into the third tier.

He said: “That’s something we’ve got to try and do.

“If we do that, then I would say we would be guaranteed a play-off spot.

“To take 66 points, the players have got to be delighted with that and, with five games to go, we have put ourselves in a very good position.”

After today’s game with Oldham Athletic, Adams’ players face two matches next week against sides who need the points for vastly different reasons.

Tuesday sees them travel to the bottom club, Grimsby Town, before third-placed Bolton Wanderers visit the Mazuma Stadium on the Saturday.

Given the nature of League Two this season, where surprise results have occurred on a weekly basis, Adams is taking it a game at a time.

“It’s the old cliche,” he said.

“It’s extremely difficult, that’s why we have got to look after ourselves.

“There’s no point looking at other results if we don’t do our job.

“We have just got to keep on going. You saw by the results on Tuesday night that the remaining games aren’t easy for any team.”

Only a handful of points separate sixth-placed Newport County AFC from the sides in mid-table, meaning goal difference could be crucial come the end of the season.

That’s an area where Morecambe are on the back foot with only three teams having conceded more than their 54 goals.

They were on course for a clean sheet during their victory against Scunthorpe United in midweek, only to concede late on.

Adams said: “I didn’t see the goal, I was trying to do a substitution at the time.

“If we had kept a clean sheet, we would have had another four goals to our goal difference and that’s important.”
