Morecambe’s Under 18s bounced back from an opening day defeat with a 4-3 win over Rochdale on Saturday.

Ben Hedley, Morgan Homson-Smith and Lewis Tomlinson were on target before a late Olly Box goal ensured Stewart Drummond and Neil Wainwright’s side came out on the right side of a seven-goal thriller at Kendal Town’s Parkside Road stadium.

It was the visitors who started the brighter and they went in front with a scrambled effort 25 minutes in.

Hedley levelled things up with a curling effort from distance before Homson-Smith scored after a fine Tomlinson pass to ensure the young Shrimps took a deserved 2-1 lead into the break.

Tomlinson then got on the scoresheet himself, netting a header on the rebound, and it looked like Morecambe were well on the way to three points.

But Rochdale weren’t done and reduced the arrears to 3-2 before equalising with five minutes to play.

The Shrimps had the final say however with substitute Box reacting quickest in the area after a couple of shots had been saved to score the winner.

Next up for the academy side is a trip to Tranmere Rovers.

Morecambe: Povey, Masters, Livingstone, Webb, Taylor, Dawson, Hedley, Cowley, Homson-Smith, Tomlinson, Townsend. Subs: Maher, Box, Jenkinson, Jordan
