Morecambe player of the year Devitt linked with Crewe move
Morecambe's player of the year Jamie Devitt is being linked with a move to Crewe Alexandra.
The out of contract 25-year-old, League 2’s top assist maker last season, has held talks with Alex boss Steve Davis according to the Crewe Chronicle.
Devitt has a new contract offer on the table from The Shrimps but is considering his options after a standout season at the Globe Arena.
Alex will be back in League 2 next season after a forgettable campaign saw them relegated at the foot of the League 1 table with just seven wins.
Davis, speaking about a target understood to be Devitt, said: “He is somebody else who has other options in higher divisions, but we’re hopeful.
“I spoke to him and his agent last week, it was a very positive conversation, we are hopeful we can get it through the door.
“He plays in the forward areas, on the wing. He was player of the year for his club last season, had the most assists in the league.
“He is mid-20s so he has some experience, he has been out on loan quite a lot and started at a top club when he was a kid.
“He’s had a really good season and wants to be at a club which is ambitious to get back up to League One.”
The former Hull City youngster, who initially joined The Shrimps on loan from Chesterfield before making the switch permanent in the summer of 2014, has been widely expected to move on but indicated at the of the season that signing a new Morecambe deal wasn’t out of the question.
He said: “I still don’t know whether my future lies here or away.
“I’ve been honest with the manager (Jim Bentley) all the way through.
“We’ve had chats where sometimes it looks like I might leave and sometimes it looks like I won’t.
“I’ve loved being here because I feel like I’m a main player which I’ve not had for most of my career.
“The gaffer’s shown loads of trust in me and I can’t thank him and Kenny (McKenna) enough if I’m here next season or not.”
