Morecambe bowed out of the FA Youth Cup as they lost out on penalties to Accrington at the Globe Arena.

The Lancashire rivals drew 2-2 in normal time but Stanley prevailed 4-2 in the shoot-out to make round three.

The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute with a long-range effort from Joe Rathbone confusing Shrimps ‘keeper Niall Maher in the blustery conditions before ending up in the back of the net.

The Shrimps replied shortly after with a well-worked goal that was finished with aplomb by Kyle Hawley after a spectacular counter attack led by Luke Jordan.

As the half came to a close Maher made two saves to deny the visitors, tipping over Joel Mills’ effort before reacting sharply to save from Harry Blackburn.

Stewart Drummond and Neil Wainwright’s side took the lead five minutes after the interval, Steve Yawson rounding the ‘keeper and scoring from the tightest of angles.

Morecambe then went close with Paul Dawson seeing a shot well-saved by Jack Little before Stanley levelled on the hour against the run of play, Rathbone converting from the penalty spot.

After a series of half-chances the game went to extra-time with Hawley denied in on goal having won the ball on halfway.

In the second period Luke Jordan hit the crossbar from close range and Ben Fletcher saw a shot well gathered by Little.

Hawley then tested Little again with a low shot but it was Stanley who almost snatched it at the death when Alex Webb produced a good block to set up a penalty shoot out.

Ben Hedley and Fletcher both scored but Yawson and Dawson missed as Stanley scored all four spot kicks.
