Having downed the previous League Two leaders, Cheltenham Town, at the Mazuma Stadium last Saturday, the Shrimps face the new pacesetters in the first of their Easter fixtures.

The Cheltenham win, along with results elsewhere, kept Morecambe sixth in the division, five points behind Cambridge but only one adrift of the automatic promotion positions.

The Shrimps also enjoy a five-point gap to seventh-placed Newport County AFC – but only six points separate Newport from Bradford City in 12th.

Having dispatched one promotion chaser in Cheltenham ahead of Friday’s trip to another, Adams isn’t attaching any extra significance to the matches ahead.

He said: “They’re only important because of the position that we’re in.

“We said to the players ‘just go out and play, we’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.’

“We’ve put ourselves in a very good position. There’s probably 10 teams that are still in with the opportunity of being in a play-off position.

“There are a lot of tough games left and it doesn’t matter if you play the top of the table or the bottom of the table, you see by the results on a weekly basis that there’s nothing guaranteed.”

Cambridge leapfrogged Cheltenham at the top of the table by way of victory at Carlisle United last Saturday.

Morecambe make the journey south knowing a win will keep them firmly in the race for the top three.

Should they need any extra incentive, then there is also the small matter of atoning for their 5-0 defeat in September’s reverse fixture.

Adams is anticipating a difficult afternoon ahead but has full confidence in his players’ abilities.

“Cambridge have come off a fantastic win away to Carlisle so we have to keep on going,” Adams said.

“It’s another tough game against Cambridge but the players are positive.

“We know how they train, walk and talk, so it’s important they take that confidence from today’s performance.”
