Victory at Harrogate Town last Saturday meant the Shrimps climbed a place to sixth in the table.

The closely-fought nature of the division meant the win left Adams’ players two points adrift of Forest Green Rovers, who occupy the final automatic promotion spot.

Another four points separate them from leaders Cheltenham Town, who visit the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday.

Morecambe manager's disappointment at forward's injury

It could all change again tonight with Forest Green and Tranmere able to pull level with second-placed Cambridge United should they beat Mansfield Town and Colchester United respectively.

Exeter City, who lie just outside the play-off spots, can close the gap on Morecambe to three points with a game in hand if they defeat Oldham Athletic.

This is the second of three consecutive free midweeks for Morecambe with Adams hopeful tonight’s results are as beneficial as last week’s, when none of the teams in and around them won.

“There have been a lot of midweek games where we haven’t played,” the manager said.

“The results (last week) were very good for us and they allowed us to keep our position in the table at this moment in time.

“The teams that had games in hand haven’t used them to their advantage.”

As Adams has previously alluded to, the lack of an outstanding team this season has made League Two a more competitive division than ever this time around.

The lack of fans, fixture backlogs and teams dealing with injuries or Covid-related absences mean the form guide has been ripped up, notably last week.

Adams said: “You just have to look at the results from the other night.

“Barrow won at Cheltenham Town for example, so it’s such a difficult league and it’s who can put a run of wins together.

“At this stage of the season, it’s about how many wins or points can be picked up.

“If you can get a win, that could prove absolutely crucial come the end of the season.”
