Morecambe manager expects Cambridge United to pose a tough test

The Shrimps welcome Cambridge to the Mazuma Stadium, looking for back-to-back wins to start the League Two campaign.

While Adams’ players overturned a deficit to win 2-1 at Cheltenham Town last weekend, Cambridge were 3-0 winners against Carlisle United.

“They did ever so well to win by three goals,” Adams said.

“That just shows you what a good side they can be and it follows on from last season when they finished strongly.

“We’ve done well and we’re obviously delighted with the start we’ve had.

“I think Cheltenham did exceptionally well last season to get into the play-offs but I think they would have gone up if it wasn’t for the shutdown.

“We did lose an early goal but we came back into the game and finished strongly, getting the equaliser and then being able to win the game.”

Those three points were followed by a Carabao Cup win against Oldham Athletic in midweek.

That made it three wins in four to start the season across all competitions, Aaron Wildig marking his return from illness with the only goal.

The 28-year-old finished last season with three goals in five outings and has been challenged to maintain that productivity.

“He hasn’t scored enough goals during his career,” Adams said. “We’re trying to get him into positions where he can score, we’ve given him that licence to get forward.

“He did really well in pre-season but had an illness that kept him out for seven to 10 days, but now he’s back and looking forward to going again.”
