Danny Carlton made a surprise return to action as Lancaster City continued their build-up to the new season with a 5-2 win at AFC Darwen.
Morecambe’s Wembley hero, who retired 12 months ago due to injury, came off the bench and scored for Darren Peacock’s side on Saturday.
Carlton, still only 31, hung up his boots last June due to a long-standing knee problem and has had a year out of the game.
The former Shrimps, Carlisle, Bury and Hyde striker was one of the three new faces as Peacock and Trevor Sinclair assess their squad ahead of the Evo-Stik First Division North season kicking off at Burscough on August 15.
Former Ilkeston forward Elliot Allen-Facey and Squires Gate player of the year Chris Anderson, a defender, were also in the squad that ran out convincing winners at a rain-soaked Anchor Ground on Saturday afternoon.
Captain Neil Marshall opened the scoring for the Dolly Blues, heading home Ryan Winder’s free kick in trademark fashion, before Allen-Facey’s precise near post finish brought City level at 2-2 after the North West Counties Premier Division side had fought back.
Reece Pearce then scored the pick of the bunch, through on goal the winger chipped a bouncing ball over the on-rushing keeper and rounded to volley home in style.
After the break Peacock’s side completed the win with two fine team goals.
The first saw Billy Akrigg, Garry Hunter and Winder were all involved as Carlton was played through on goal to slot the ball home to make it four.
The Shrimps legend then turned provider, feeding Akrigg who squared for Gavin Clark to make it 5-2 with a simple finish.
The Dolly Blues complete their pre-season campaign at home to Workington this Saturday, August 8.
Kick-off at Giant Axe is 3pm.
