Morecambe Ladies claimed a vital victory in their battle to beat the drop, seeing off bottom of the table Sheffield United Community LFC 7-1 at Lancaster and Morecambe College on Sunday.

It was a bright opening for Morecambe and they scored within three minutes.

Sheffield United were fielding a high defensive line and Sophie Fish beat the offside trap and raced through to lob Lauren Santoro and score the opener.

Emma Kay then made her first impression on the game. She opened her account by firing in after Megan Doherty on the right, crossed to find her on the penalty spot in space to make it 2-0.

Becky Whittingham then timed a ball through to Doherty perfectly, with the striker running on to the ball to chip the keeper and make it three.

On 38 minutes the ball was moved across to the right to Beth Fisher, her pass split the defence and Emma Kay latched onto the ball and placed it over the keeper for her second to make it 4-0.

Sheffield came out fighting in the second half, but two goals in two minutes put the result beyond doubt.

A cross from the left flashed across the goalmouth was chased by Kay.

She picked it up and brought the ball back along the goal line, laying it into the path of Doherty to smash it into the net.

Kay then got on the end of a low cross from the left to smash in at the far post and seal her hat-trick and make it six.

Doherty worked hard to get her third goal, pressing and dispossessing a defender, racing away towards goal and beating the keeper to make it 7-0.

Sheffield deservedly got something to show for their efforts, Chloe Lacey managed to get the ball into the Morecambe box and Kimberley Brown was first to meet it and bundled the ball in for a consolation goal.
