Morecambe Ladies were edged out 1-0 at top of the table Liverpool Marshalls Feds on Sunday.
Sophie Fish hit the bar twice for Nick Barrett’s visitors who were more than a match for the leaders of the Women’s Premier League Northern Division One.
The Shrimps knew they were in for a tough trip to Merseyside but had inflicted one of the Feds’ only two defeats so far this campaign on the opening day of the season.
The Morecambe side was a strong as it had looked in some time but it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon when Emma Reader was soon called into action by Faye McCoy.
The sides largely cancelled each other out however with the hosts having the best of the chances, Beth Fisher rushing back to clear an effort off the line after Levi Wensley had slid the ball past Reader.
Captain Channi Thompson then blasted wide before the Feds took the lead on 24 minutes, McCoy rising highest to convert a corner.
Morecambe came into the game as the first half drew to a close but couldn’t find a way through.
That continued into the second half, with Fish, moved into central midfield after the break, rattling the crossbar after pouncing on a loose Feds pass.
It was developing into an end-to-end contest with Faye Cummings twice firing wide before Fish hit the bar for a second time with Danielle Hill in the Liverpool goal well beaten.
Becky Whittingham was then next to fire a shot narrowly wide for Barrett’s side with Megan Doherty also bringing a diving save from Hill.
Liverpool weren’t without chances, Rosie Havlin’s shot being blocked and Charlotte Apps shooting wide as the hosts began to find gaps on the break as Morecambe pushed forwards.
At the other end the Feds held on however and knew they’d been in a game when the final whistle blew to confirm their victory as the Shrimps were left to wonder what might have been.
This Sunday, The Shrimpettes host Norton & Stockton Ancients in the first round proper of the FA Cup.
The game is a 1pm kick-off at Lancaster & Morecambe College.
