Morecambe lost out 7-1 in their latest North West League 1 futsal match after a second-half whirlwind from Preston North End at the Leeds Futsal Arena.

The teams were evenly matched in the first half with few chances created.

Morecambe had a penalty shout when they thought the ball had been handled in the area but the referee ignored the protestations and Preston broke to force a fine save from Shrimps goalkeeper Kyle Burgan.

The teams went in level at the break with Morecambe’s injuries and lack of numbers ultimately telling in the second half.

North End took full advantage and left the Shrimps chasing shadows as they put together a succession of fine passing moves.

With seven second-half goals conceded, it was a total collapse from Morecambe and the only consolation was a fine strike from skipper Jordan Smith.

Coach Michael Stringfellow said: “We were disciplined in the first half and kept our shape well, but ultimately it was the lack of players which cost us.

“The lads were drained in the second half and we just didn’t have the personnel to rotate and bring on some fresh legs.”

The next fixture sees Morecambe up against Carlisle United on February 24.
