The Shrimps revealed on Thursday that the club captain suffered a pulmonary embolism during his recovery from a serious knee injury picked up on the opening day of the season at Hartlepool.

Summer signing Murphy is now on the mend but the blood clot meant he was initially rushed to Aintree Hospital after complaining of back pain and shortness of breath.

He is back in full, non-contact, training having recovered from the initial medial ligament injury but is awaiting the all clear from a haematology specialist to return to first-team action.

Bentley said: “He’s on the mend which is fantastic.

“It is scary when you get the phone call to say what had happened.

“It was an absolute body blow when we lost him in the first game of the season at Hartlepool but to then go and get what he got really wobbled everyone.

“He’s close to the lads. It wasn’t nice to hear. We were hearing things like it could be life-threatening. It’s very dangerous stuff.

“We’ve done everything we can by him and he’s seen the specialists.

“His injury has progressed perfectly but his condition is being monitored and we’ll do what’s right by him to make sure we get him back on the pitch and playing football.

“He’s desperate to play. It’s great to have him around the group, he’s a big character and our captain.

“It’s going well for him now after a big shock and hopefully his progress will continue in good fashion and he’ll be back on the pitch sooner rather than later.”

Doctors believe the pulmonary embolism was brought on by a deep vain thrombosis caused by his knee being immobilised in a brace.

Former Accrington midfielder Murphy signed a two-year contract at the Globe Arena in the summer after arriving from Wycombe.

He played just eight minutes of the opening game at Hartlepool before picking up the knee injury.

The 25-year-old is due to see his specialist next Friday, November 20.
