Morecambe boss is buoyed by their start to the season

The Shrimps go into tomorrow’s trip to Oldham Athletic sitting second in the table after three wins from their opening four matches.

They have already seen off Cheltenham Town, Southend United and Port Vale, and while the five-goal loss to Cambridge United isn’t being overlooked, Adams is delighted at how the opening month has panned out.

“We have had a difficult run to start the season with,” he said.

“Cheltenham away, Southend away and Port Vale at home; one who came down in Southend, one who was close to the play-offs (Port Vale) and one in the play-offs (Cheltenham).

“We have been able to pick up nine points, which has been really positive, and the players can take confidence from that.”

Four games into the season means it may be too early to declare it as one in the eye for those who annually tip the Shrimps to finish in the bottom two.

However, having previously spoken of his desire to shed the ‘little old Morecambe’ image, Adams is looking for his players to maintain their run of results during a busy month.

He said: “We know what we are as a football club.

“I think that we, as players and staff, know it’s difficult coming up against other sides but we have competed well at the start of the season.

“The league is really open and, as you know, there are a lot of games to be played in October.

“I think there are seven games, so from that point of view, there are a lot of points to be picked up.”

There had been the hope of an eighth game this month with the final EFL Trophy group stage match against Manchester United’s youngsters.

It presently appears on the Shrimps’ fixture list as taking place on November 10, subject to confirmation.

Speaking after the win against Port Vale last weekend, Adams had outlined a scenario whereby it could be played next Tuesday, October 13.

However, it would appear that a game next month remains the likeliest outcome.

“We’re still waiting to hear back from Man United,” Adams said.

“It looks like it will be either November 10 or November 17 when the game is played.”
