Morecambe boss hopes to bring in at least one more player this month

Shrimps’ manager Derek Adams is confident of adding to his squad with the window closing at 11pm on Monday, February 1.

Adams has already brought in Brad Lyons on loan from Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season.

His arrival has been offset by the early departure of another loanee, Newcastle United goalkeeper Jake Turner.

A replacement for him would be the obvious hole to fill with youngster Andre Da Silva Mendes the sole back-up to Mark Halstead.

“There will be movement in terms of people coming in,” Adams said.

“We have already done one in the window with Brad Lyons but yes, there will be some other movement going on.

“It’s been hard with clubs being restricted in terms of squad size but the virus has also made it difficult, particularly because teams want to keep as many players as they can in case of any outbreak.”

With Morecambe defying the pre-season predictions to sit eighth in League Two midway through the season, speculation concerning some of their players is inevitable.

One midweek rumour had linked Carlos Mendes-Gomes with a £100,000 move to Blackpool this month.

That is understood to be wide of the mark at the moment, though without naming names, Adams admitted one of his squad had attracted attention.

“We have had one offer for one of our players,” he said.

“However, it was an offer that we quickly rejected and that’s it.”

As Adams said, the pandemic has made it harder for clubs to bring in players as well as affecting preparations for next season.

Normally at this time of year, clubs would have started talks with those players whose contracts are due to expire over the summer but conversations of that kind have been put on the back burner.

Adams said: “We can’t do that just yet because finances are difficult with everyone not knowing if we’re going to get supporters back this season or next season.

“The club is busy drawing up budgets for different scenarios but I’ve got to say a lot of clubs have done really well to get through this situation because it hasn’t been easy.”
