Morecambe boss hails his players' display after Oldham Athletic victory

The Shrimps had looked well in charge as Carlos Mendes Gomes’ double, as well as efforts from Aaron Wildig and Cole Stockton, put them 4-1 up with 78 minutes gone.

However, the Latics - who had seen Conor McAleny score in the first half - set up a nervous finish at the Mazuma Stadium with two goals in 10 minutes from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Kyle Jameson.

Nevertheless, Morecambe withstood four minutes of added time to back up the midweek 4-1 win over Scunthorpe United.

Adams said: “I thought it was a fantastic performance from us.

“The scoreline should have been wider from our point of view with the amount of chances we created and the goals we could have scored.

“We knew Oldham would try and play inside their box. We pressed them very high and went man for man all over the pitch.

“It became a basketball game then, it was attack against defence.

“That’s how we wanted it to go. We scored some really good goals and I think the performance, moving on from the other night, was another top one.”

It was an entertaining game featuring two of the division’s highest-scoring teams, though two sides who have also conceded plenty of goals.

The key stage of the game was the passage of play leading up to half-time.

After McAleny had cancelled out Mendes Gomes’ opener, Wildig and Stockton scored twice in five minutes to establish a 3-1 lead at the break.

Adams said: “We knew, going into half-time, if we could get a couple of goals up, it would give us that advantage.

“We know Oldham are a very good team going forward, they have scored a lot of goals this season but we knew they have conceded goals.

“It’s three points at the end of the day and it enables us to get ahead of the teams below us and catch the teams above us.”
