Morecambe go into this afternoon’s home match with Newport County AFC sitting fifth in the table.

Only three points separate them from leaders Cheltenham Town who, for that matter, are only nine points clear of ninth-placed Salford City.

The closeness of the table seemingly backs up Adams’ view that there isn’t an outstanding team in the division - and leaves the Shrimps’ boss anticipating a nervy conclusion to the campaign.

He said: “We know what we have got to do to get ourselves in a very good position.

“I think it will go down to the last game of the season to decide the automatic promotion places.

“It is that tight and we want to be there in the mix.”

Morecambe’s tally of 56 points with 12 games to go is already their best since the 63 gained in the 2014/15 season.

Only Exeter City (57) and Cambridge United (50) have scored more than the Shrimps’ 49 goals in League Two so far.

That’s despite them showing both aspects of their attacking play in the midweek draw at Forest Green Rovers.

Not for the first time this season, the Shrimps were left to rue missed opportunities but, on the other hand, they also showed their spirit with yet another stoppage time goal giving them a 2-2 draw.

Adams said: “We’re just perhaps disappointed that we didn’t take our chances at Forest Green which would have given us a better position in the game.

“Even against Carlisle last Saturday, we go 3-0 up and we still have two or three very good opportunities.

“We have to be proud of the players though.

“They keep on going, they have got belief in their ability and they have shown that a number of times this season.”
