Morecambe boss Bentley: We came here to do a job and spoilt the promotion party

A late goal from Paul Mullin after a fine display from Wycombe ‘keeper Matt Ingram put a huge dent in the home side’s automatic promotion hopes.

The Shrimps’ say in who gets promotion doesn’t end there with third-placed Southend the visitors to the Globe Arena on the final day of the season on Saturday.

Bentley said: “They’ve had a fantastic season and I’ve got a lot of time for Gareth Ainsworth but we’ve come here to win the game.

“We’ll do exactly the same against Southend, we knew we’d have a big say in promotion.

“We had Burton celebrating on our patch and we were a little bit envious. That’s what we’re in the game for.

“Wycombe’s crowd we’re hoping for exactly the same but we spoiled the party and won the game.

“They’re still in it and maybe we can go and beat Southend next week but all I’m concerned about it us.

“I thought we were great today and thoroughly deserved the three points.”

The Shrimps’ fortunes changed in the game with the introduction from the bench of Mullin and Padraig Amond early in the second half.

Bentley said: “It was a difficult pitch to play on, very bobbly, and not much football was being played and there was a lot of endeavour from both sides.

“There wasn’t much in it in the first half and both ‘keepers weren’t really tested.

“They started great in the second half and I changed it and we came up trumps with the substitutes.

“We’re up to 60 points, that’s what we wanted to do and hopefully we can finish on 63.”
