Aaron Wildig got the only goal of the game to hand Bentley’s men a first Football League win over their Lancashire rivals at the 17th attempt.

Bentley said: “It’s about time isn’t it?

“I’m absolutely made up that we got the all important win to break the cycle.

“But on that evidence Accrington will have a good season. We weren’t good enough today to be honest.

“We were excellent against Hartlepool and we did well against Sheffield United and were beaten in both games.

“We weren’t at the races today but we’ve scraped a 1-0 win.

“I’ll take it all day long. This one is about the result and getting that all important win because it’s been a long time coming.

“I’ve been involved in the last eight years since it’s started and it’s been hard to take.

“But I’m made up for the fans who’ve got something to sing about, the players, Aaron Wildig getting the goal and being the hero of the day, the staff and for everyone concerned.

“It’s a fabulous result for us.”

Bentley reserved particular praise for Wildig who had been a doubt ahead of the game after hobbling off against Sheffield United.

The Shrimps boss said: “He battled through.

“He had a nasty knock but trained yesterday and gave it a go.

“He’s a big player for us and came up trumps with the all-important goal.

“I’m made up for him today, coming to a new club and getting the goal to win the match.”
