Morecambe add former Newcastle United youngster to their squad

Morecambe boss Derek Adams has added to his squad with the signing of former Newcastle United defender Liam Gibson.

The 23-year-old full-back was released by Newcastle at the end of last season, having previously had loan spells with Gateshead, Accrington Stanley and Grimsby Town.

He provides another option on the left-hand side of defence and helps to fill the gap recently created by Luke Conlan’s departure to AFC Fylde.

“We’re delighted to have signed Liam,” Adams told the Morecambe website.

“He provides competition at left-back and has good experience being a product of the Newcastle United Academy and spending time on loan at Grimsby Town in League Two last season."

Gibson won’t be eligible for the Shrimps’ Carabao Cup tie with his former employers tomorrow night but will join up with them for Saturday’s match at Southend United.
