Morecambe 2-2 Plymouth

MORECAMBE were denied victory in their final home game of the season after a late Darren Purse header gave Plymouth a point.

The Shrimps got off to the worst possible start when Danny Carlton lost possession and a quick break gave Luke Young a run on goal. The youngster let fly from the edge of the area and saw his effort take a deflection off Andy Parrish and beat Barry Roche to his left.

Plymouth should have scored a second through midfielder Ladjie Soujouna but thankfully he missed an open goal on 22 minutes. Veteran striker Steve Fletcher went close as he got on to the end of a Robbie Williams far post cross and then fired a sweet volley which forced Roche into a flying save.

Morecambe’s only effort of note in the first half came when Carlton fired over after a neat move.

The Shrimps were much brighter after the break however and Jordan Burrow made it 1-1 on 51 minutes when he headed home an excellent right wing cross from Izak Reid past Ollie Chenoweth from three yards out.

The goal sparked Morecambe into life and they took the lead on 71 minutes when substitute Lewis Alessandra ran on to a long through ball and chipped over the head of Chenoweth who raced from his goal.

The Shrimps looked set for victory but then Roche punched a Williams free kick to the edge of his own box and Purse was in the perfect spot to head the ball into the empty Shrimps’ goal.

Morecambe finished with a late flurry as Craig Curran headed an Alessandra cross onto the top of the crossbar and Reid’s wind-assisted corner beat Chenoweth but came back off the post and they could not find a third goal.
