It was Tranmere who started on the front foot with Turnbull seeing a shot blocked and Kristian Dennis heading wide when he should have hit the target.

Morecambe took some time to get into the game with Tom Bloxham at the heart of most attacks, two runs down the right ending with chances for JJ McKiernan.

His first effort was a half-hit shot easily gathered by Luke McGee but he went closer three minutes before the break, running into the box but denied by an excellent block from the keeper.

The Shrimps continued to look the more threatening after the break with Michael Mellon firing a free-kick straight at McGee and Jordan Slew seeing a shot from distance deflected behind.

Tranmere hit back with substitute Rob Apter forcing Smith into a save before the Shrimps took the lead on 72 minutes when Turnbull flicked Stokes’ well-struck cross into his own goal.

A point blank save from McGee denied the excellent Bloxham on 80 minutes before a swift counter-attack ended with the keeper doing well to tip away Mellon’s effort.

McGee should have been rewarded for his heroics but Tranmere wasted two glorious chances at the death.

The excellent Apter put in a superb late cross which no Tranmere player gambled to get on the end of and, in stoppage time, he was denied by Smith and Connor Jennings fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
