Morecambe have finally done it.

Aaron Wildig’s goal shortly before the quarter hour was enough to hand them a first Football League win over Accrington Stanley at the 17th attempt.

In a Lancashire derby often low on quality The Shrimps did enough to end their Stanley jinx and get their League 2 campaign up and running at the Globe Arena on Saturday.

Stanley dominated the opening 10 minutes with Josh Windass testing Barry Roche with a shot from 25 yards before Piero Mingoia saw an effort deflected over the bar.

But it was The Shrimps who went in front on 13 minutes.

Paul Mullin fed Jamie Devitt on the right side of the area and the Irishman pulled the ball back for Wildig to score Morecambe’s first goal of the season on the half-volley from 15 yards.

The Shrimps nearly doubled their lead on 25 minutes but Alan Goodall’s sweetly struck drive from 30 yards came back off the crossbar.

But the hosts looked vulnerable when Stanley attacked with purpose, playing the slicker football the visitors went close with Mingoia and Matt Crooks seeing tame shots saved as they found plenty of space just outside the area.

The Shrimps, who would have perhaps felt fortunate to go into the break in front, had more of the play early in the second period but it was a more physical game after the interval with clear-cut chances at a premium.

Wildig nearly had a second on 68 minutes but after a sweeping move involving Kevin Ellison and Andy Fleming his shot from 15 yards was helped over the bar by Jason Mooney.

For the visitors Adam Morgan was in the thick of the action seconds after coming on but could only slice a shot wide from Mingoia’s cross.

Stanley should have been level 15 minutes from time but Windass could only blaze over a golden chance from six yards after Roche had parried substitute Sean McConville’s cross.

Billy Kee then could only head Mooney’s booming clearance down field wide on 80 minutes.

It was nervy finale at the Globe Arena, Crooks shooting wide from 20 yards just before the game entered five minutes of stoppage time.

But Morecambe hung on for a memorable win after eight long seasons without a League 2 victory over their East Lancashire rivals.
