Morecambe boss Derek Adams admitted his side was poor at both ends of the pitch after an afternoon to forget for the Shrimps.

Seven days on from opening their League Two campaign with victory at Cheltenham Town, Adams’ players were beaten 5-0 by Cambridge United at the Mazuma Stadium.

Three first-half goals in nine minutes left them playing catch-up at the break, after which two more goals completed a thoroughly miserable afternoon for the home camp.

Adams said: “If you look at the game, the goals we conceded were extremely poor.

“Breaking it down, we haven’t done enough in the attacking third to warrant one goal.

“Defensively, as a team, we were very poor today and I think we allowed Cambridge to do what they do which was to get the ball forward.

“The two strikers (Joe Ironside and Paul Mullin) we knew would cause us problems and they did all afternoon.

“We changed formation a couple of times and it didn’t work for us today.

“Our choice of pass was really poor and the creative side of our game was null and void.”

Goals from Wes Hoolahan and Adam May, either side of a Paul Mullin effort which found the net via the woodwork and Morecambe keeper Jake Turner, saw Cambridge three goals up at the break.

Mullin then scored twice in 10 minutes during the second half with the Shrimps, barring early efforts from Liam McAlinden and Harry Davis, toiling in attack.

“I would say Cambridge aren’t the best side we’ve played this year,” Adams said.

“Five-nil doesn’t reflect the game, that’s my honest opinion; I think the goals were preventable and we should have done a lot better.

“I’m not saying we could have got something out of the game but I think the scoreline does flatter Cambridge.”
