TWO second half goals from a young Manchester United side inflicted a second home pre-season defeat in a week on Morecambe.

Clinical finishes from captain Daniel Drinkwater and substitute Jessie Lingard gave the United of the future victory in what was another good outing for The Shrimps.

In a Morecambe side that may give possible pointers to how they will line up for the opening game of the season at home to Barnet on Saturday, Jim Bentley’s side set up in a 4-3-3 formation with Izak Reid and Lewis Alessandra playing either side of Phil Jevons.

It was Alessandra who had the home side’s first real shot on goal in a scoreless first period, firing over the bar from 20 yards.

The best chance of the opening half fell to Reid, however.

Put through by an excellent pass from Andy Fleming, the Shrimps wide man beat the last man only to be foiled by the only senior United player in the visiting side, Tomasz Kuszczak, who put up a strong right hand despite diving down to his left to deny the former Macclesfield man.

United almost went ahead themselves immediately afterwards, John Cofie forcing Barry Roche to save at his near post after a strong run and shot.

Fleming then went close for the Shrimps seeing a 25-yard shot sail narrowly over the bar.

The main concern in the first half was the departure of Will Haining, captain on the night, through injury just before the break.

Immediately replaced by Danny Carlton after going down following one of several good runs down the right, Haining was later revealed to have been taken off as a precaution as he felt a twinge in his calf, but is expected to be okay for the start of the season.

United showed flashes of real quality throughout the half, Italian Davide Petrucci especially catching the eye.

The Shrimps nearly went ahead five minutes into the second period, a Gary Hunter free kick 35 yards from goal was flicked on to the head of Carlton who saw his effort hit a post.

Just before the hour mark United went ahead. Drinkwater capitalised on a risky Kieran Charnock pass to dispossess Stewart Drummond before driving at the Morecambe defence and firing a left foot shot past substitute goalkeeper Shaun Routledge.

Calrton nearly hit back shortly afterwards for the Shrimps forcing United’s sub ’keeper Sam Johnstone into a good save low to his left.

But it wasn’t to be the home side’s night as United doubled their lead through Lingard, who after good work from Cofie, curled the ball past the outstretched hand of Routledge from just inside the area.

United looked like they could put some more gloss on the scoreline as William Keane forced Routledge to beat away a shot shortly afterwards and then a mix up between Charnock and his goalkeeper nearly let the visitors in.

The Shrimps had one more big chance to get back into the game ten minutes from time, Reid firing high and wide when he should have done better racing on to a Laurence Wilson cross.
