Mixed emotions for Morecambe manager Bentley

The Shrimps seemed set to effectively secure their Football League status for another year when Garry Thompson and Callum Lang put them 2-0 up at half-time.

However, Chesterfield rallied in the second half with Kristian Dennis and Andy Kellett hauling League Two’s bottom club back on level terms.

Both sides had opportunities to turn one point into three as the draw kept Morecambe 20th in the table, seven points clear of second-bottom Barnet and with a game in hand.

“Where do you start?” Bentley said when asked about his feelings come full-time.

“There are mixed emotions; I’m happy we got away with a point but also disappointed we dropped two points.

“You see it so many times with regards to momentum as different substitutes have different effects on the game.

“Chesterfield are a good footballing side but they are missing something because they are bottom of the table.

“First half, they had one corner and one ball across the goalmouth but we were disappointed with our shape in that half and we know we can play better.

“However, we rehearsed our set plays which got us a goal and we had a bit of endeavour from Callum Lang for our second.

“Second half, they changed it by bringing on Chris O’Grady and they went more direct but we’ve had chances to get the third goal.

“At 2-1 though, they had their fans behind them and I’m disappointed at the manner in which we conceded the goals.

“When it’s 2-2 you think you’d take a point but we went at them and we had great opportunities to win it - as did they.

“It would have been a hammer blow if we had lost the game but we could have played better; our ball retention was poor at times and there is a lot more to our game.”
