FORMER Morecambe FC boss Sammy McIlroy has given his backing to new Shrimps manager Jim Bentley.

McIlroy, who guided the Shrimps to promotion to the Football League, also told the Visitor that he is taking a break from the game, after leaving the club last Monday at the end of more than five years in charge.

The former Northern Ireland boss said: “I’ve spoken to Jim and wished him all the best.

“He was a fantastic player for Morecambe and when I put him in charge of the reserve team it took to it like a duck to water.

“I hope he does well. I know he will give it 100 per cent because that’s the type of bloke he is.

“But every manager needs a bit of luck. You can be the best team in the league but you need that bit of luck.

“We didn’t have it last season with the stadium being late so I hope Jim gets some.”
