Released Morecambe midfielder Joe McGee could yet have a Shrimps future as he makes good progress in his comeback from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

The 21-year-old is out of contract but is training with the first-team squad on his road to recovery.

He was set to miss around nine months after picking up the injury in the final reserve game of last season against Shrewsbury but is back running ahead of schedule.

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley: “He’s back running which is great and is well ahead of schedule for a cruciate knee ligament.

“He’s obviously not signed as a player but we’re doing everything we can to get him back to full fitness and competitive football as soon as possible.

“It was great to see him back at the training ground back running the other day.

“He got a nice round of applause from the lads. He’s a likeable fella and we hope he goes from strength to strength.

“We’ll just see what’s what when he’s back playing competitive football. That’s a long way away but he’s made big strides.”
