The result against their relegation rivals was a bitter blow for Nick Barrett’s side who are now three points clear of the bottom two with four games to play.

The Shrimps made a bright start at Wallasey and were soon a goal to the good.

Laura Callis’ cross from the right was only half-cleared with Dannii Cross firing a shot into the top left-hand corner.

Cross then hit the crossbar as Morecambe looked to press home their advantage and put an end to their recent bad luck.

It was a largely scrappy game however as both sides struggled to get their passing game going.

For the hosts Kate Horne hit the crossbar while Georgia Lupton brought a save from Bethany Greathead for the Shrimpettes.

The drama came with four minutes left on the clock when Charlotte Cloy was adjudged to have been fouled in the area and Beth Woolley made no mistake from the spot.

Things went from bad to worse for the Shrimps when Tranmere went in front three minutes into injury time.

After a frantic finale Hannah Ouldred pushed the ball forward to Cloy who turned and beat one challenge before scoring to continue Morecambe’s luckless run.

The ladies are next in action in their rearranged Lancashire Cup final at Leyland’s County Ground.

Barrett’s side face Blackburn Rovers on Monday, April 13.
