Liverpool loanee Danny Ward targets game time with Morecambe

The 21-year-old Liverpool loanee became Morecambe’s sixth goalkeeper of the season when he made his Football League debut in the 1-1 draw at Carlisle last month.

After impressing at Brunton Park Ward says he now can’t wait for more of the same.

The former Wrexham man said: “It’s something I’ve needed for the last couple of seasons really.

“Obviously due to circumstances at Liverpool I’ve not been able to do that.

“It was a relief to get on the pitch and I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to more.

“It’s ideal for me to come and get games especially towards the end of the season.

“Hopefully it can be a fruitful spell for myself and for Morecambe.”

It’s a been a crazy fortnight for the rising stopper as he was whisked away to join the Wales squad heading to Israel straight after the Carlisle game.

Ward said: “It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me.

“It shows different sides of football but it’s all the same we’re still fighting for three points whether it be with Wales, Liverpool or Morecambe.

“It’s the same agenda for every team.”

The Wales camp is a great one to be around at the moment with Chris Coleman’s side, inspired by Real Madrid star Gareth Bale, closing in on a spot at Euro 2016 having not appeared at a major finals since the 1958 World Cup.

Ward said: “The experience is great.

“When you’re around the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsay it can only bring you on, especially as a goalkeeper.

“There’s a real good team spirit now there with all of us. 
“I’ve been involved a couple of times now and it was a great result so it’s all going well.”

As well as being involved in a successful Wales camp, Ward has been at the heart of the Liverpool first team for large parts of this season.

An injury to number two Brad Jones meant he spent 19 games on the bench as cover for Simon Mignolet.

Ward said: “The aim for me personally is to be on the pitch during big nights at Anfield in the future.

“Those appearances on the bench will stand me in good stead.

“I’m lucky in the sense that we’ve got a great ‘keeper coach at Liverpool who’s played at Tranmere for years and years in John Achterberg.

“He’s also worked with ‘keepers like Pepe (Reina, now with Bayern Munich) and Simon Mignolet.

“Hopefully being in contact with them and training with them over the years is going to stand me in good stead as well.”
