Morecambe Ladies FC are through to the third round of the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in their history.
In what was also their maiden second round appearance they saw off Liverpool Feds 6-3 at Lancaster and Morecambe College on Sunday.
A trio of braces from Megan Doherty, Jenny Keane and Becky Whittingham proved the difference against the higher-ranked Merseyside outfit.
They have been rewarded with a trip to Coventry, two leagues above them in the Women’s Premier League National Division, in round three.
Jim Bentley’s men’s side were eliminated in round two of this year’s FA Cup at Coventry, losing 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena in December.
Early goals from Doherty and Keane’s double put the Shrimps girls well in command but the visitors pulled two back to make it 3-2 at the break.
Home ‘keeper Catherine Clough was the busier of the two stoppers at the start of the second half, making a string of vital saves to keep her side in front.
Doherty then got her second to give Morecambe a two-goal advantage, beating the ‘keeper to a long ball and finishing unchallenged.
Whittingham then added the final two goals for the home side to put them well in command, a hopeful volley flying in off the post before sliding one under the advancing keeper to make the score 6-2.
Liverpool did pull a goal back late on but it didn’t affect the final outcome and Morecambe Ladies held on keep their dream cup run alive.
They travel to Coventry in the next round on Sunday, February 3.
