Ladies build up to Newcastle tie with win over Leeds

Morecambe Ladies warmed up for their huge cup tie at Newcastle United with a stunning come-from-behind win at Leeds.

Trailing 2-1 with four minutes remaining Beth Fisher fired in a screamer to level things up before Megan Doherty, on as a substitute having been struggling with injury, scored the winner in the Women’s Premier League Northern Division One clash.

It sets Nick Barrett’s side up perfectly for the trip to North East in the League Cup tie for what is arguably the biggest game in the club’s history on Sunday.

Leeds took the lead in the 33rd minute when Carey Huegett looped home a free-kick after Morecambe had been penalised for handball.

Morecambe equalised in first-half stoppage time when Georgia Lupton raced onto a through ball and coolly finished past Leeds ‘keeper Colman.

After a back and forth opening to the second half Leeds went back in front 20 minutes from time. Vicky Fytche met a corner with her shot deflecting home off Becky Whittingham.

Leeds looked set for victory but Morecambe had other ideas, Fisher firing her stunner into the top corner before Doherty stepped up.

Hannah Paling sent a deep ball over the home defence with the Shrimpettes hotshot bringing the ball down and lifting it over the goalkeeper.

Leeds came back at Morecambe but after four minutes of stoppage time the ladies hung on for a memorable win.
