Still only 23, the tough-tackling midfielder has signed a new 12-month contract to take him into a fourth year with The Shrimps having already racked up more than 100 Football League appearances.

Kenyon said: “It’s gone very quickly, it doesn’t seem like I’ve been here four years.

“When the gaffer talks about the experienced lads he mentions me in there.

“Why not? I’ve played over 100 games and there are young lads coming in.

“We’re going to have to rally around.

“I’m looking forward to another challenge this year.”

That challenge will again be keeping The Shrimps in the League 2 as they enter a 10th season in the Football League.

Just four wins in 2016 as they hurtled down the table to finish 21st again means most pundits are tipping Jim Bentley’s men for the drop.

Kenyon said: “Everyone always writes us off.

“In my first year the gaffer laminated a piece of paper and said ‘look, you’re favourites to go down’.

“Every game he slapped it and it seemed to work.

“We like being the underdogs and that’s where we’ve seemed to pick up most of our good results, when we go away from home and play the bigger sides.”

The former Lancaster City and Stockport County man believes The Shrimps need to look beyond simply beating the drop however, pointing to the successes of near neighbours Accrington Stanley and AFC Wimbledon last season.

He said: “Why not see how high we can go?

“Obviously we want to stay in the league, that’s the main thing.

“But then who says we can’t do the play-offs like Accy did?

“There was Wimbledon as well who went up so why can’t we do it?

“I can’t wait for it to start now.

“All the hard work is out of the way and the even harder work starts now, the games.

“I’m looking forward to the first game away at Grimsby.”
