Kenyon: It’s great to get amongst the goals but three points were most important thing

The midfielder’s two rare strikes, and a late stunner from Padraig Amond, saw Jim Bentley’s side prevail 3-1 and end a run of five home games without a win.  Kenyon, who scored just his second and third goals for the club, said: “I’m really pleased.

“I always love scoring it’s just not happened much this season.

“Thankfully it’s happened twice today.

“It was good to get the goals but the three points were the most important thing.”

The two strikes couldn’t have been more different, the first a glancing header from a Jamie Devitt corner and the second a hooked volley after Andy Parrish’s initial effort had been saved.

The former Lancaster City man conceded he had been upstaged by Amond however who lashed home a stunning half-volley to settle the game after Conor Chaplin had pulled a goal back for the visitors.

He said: “I caught the second one well.

“The first was a well-worked corner, I just got across the front and got a flick on it and I don’t know what happened after that I just heard everyone cheer and thought it must be mine!

“They were two good goals but Podge’s goal might get the goal of the day.

“It settled it as well after they scored.”

Kenyon admitted nerves did start to jangle when Pompey gave themselves hope late on.

He said: “We played some great stuff in the first half I thought we did very well.

“We limited them to very little but when the goal went in and you saw 11 minutes (of stoppage time after Josh Passley’s injury) go up I thought, please don’t.

“But Podge’s goal made sure we got a very good win.”
