MORECAMBE striker Phil Jevons said he was in a state of shock after hearing the news of Wales manager Gary Speed’s death on Sunday.
Jevons was a team mate of Speed’s during his days as a young player at Everton and said he was left numb by the news of his shock death.
The 32-year-old said: “I was at Everton between the ages of 12 and 21 and Gary was there during that time.
“He was a great player and just a great bloke. When you are a young footballer you are always a bit scared to approach the senior professionals but he wasn’t like that.
“He was happy for you to ask him for advice and he would give it freely and show a real interest in making you a better player.
“He was also one of the players the coaches said we should model ourselves on. They pointed to the likes of Gary, Nick Barmby and Dave Watson and told us to watch what they did on and off the pitch and we all did that.”
