Garstang boss: Wet weather now '˜beyond a joke'

The Riversiders had yet another match called off on Saturday after mass postponements in December and January and Crossley says it is likely Garstang’s game at Southport Hesketh will also fall foul of the predicted wet weather.

The former Bury, Torquay, Accrington Stanley, Morecambe and Lancaster City player says he has never known a Winter like it.

He said: “It is getting beyond a joke. In all my years in football I have never known anything like this.

“It is hard to get motivated every week.

“When we have been training on a Thursday it has been raining and then it is a case of checking the weather on Friday for it to be called off on Saturday.

“It is doubtful that Saturday’s game will be on.

“I don’t think they have played at home since October.”

If the game is on assistant boss Mark Thornley. 50, will replace suspended keeper Dan Curwen.

And Crossley says the bad weather has led to a busy March fixture list.

He said: “We have seven games and two or three night games in March which is not ideal. We also have fixtures over Easter weekend.

“We just need four or five days without rain so that the pitches can dry out.

“At the moment we are only getting a day or so without rain and the pitches are still saturated.

“But it is not just at West Lancs League level teams in the Conference and the Football League had games called off too.

“But this weather can’t go on forever and hopefully soon we can get a run of games.”
