The Wembley hero, now with Wycombe, has not faced The Shrimps since leaving for Scunthorpe in 2008.

Thompson, who came through the ranks at Christie Park, told wycombewanderers.co.uk: “It’s a nice game for my friends and family but for me, it’s all about the result.

“It’s my first time back at Morecambe as a player as I was injured when we went there with Bradford, and it’ll be the first time I’ve played at the Globe Arena because their home ground was Christie Park when I was there.

“Sentiment goes out the window when I get there and hopefully we can get the right result.”

The 34-year-old has been an instant hit at Adams Park having joined from Notts County, scoring both goals in the 2-0 win at Barnet on Saturday.

He said: “It’s always nice to get off the mark.

“It was a great win and thoroughly deserved.

“The gaffer’s said he wants to play me up front and score goals so it was nice to do that, but it doesn’t matter if it’s me, Paul (Hayes) or anyone else who finds the net as long as we get the right results.”
