Former Morecambe midfielder Wright heads back to America
Former Morecambe midfielder Andy Wright has returned to his former US College as a coach.
After completing his playing career with Southport in the National League last season the versatile 31-year-old is back at West Virginia University as assistant coach.
Released by Liverpool as a youngster Wright then headed across the pond and is noted as being one of the best players in the college’s history after a successful spell between 2004 and 2007.
Wright ranks in the top-10 in team history in numerous statistical categories and during his time donning the Old Gold and Blue, he helped lead the Mountaineers to three NCAA Tournaments and was named the Big East Midfielder of the Year in 2007 and a Big East All-Conference selection from 2005-07.
He then returned home where he played for Scunthorpe, Grimsby, on loan, The Shrimps, between 2012 and 2015, and finally Southport.
Wright said: “Although it was difficult hanging up the boots for good, I am really excited for the next chapter here at WVU.
“To return to my alma mater in a coaching capacity was something I had always dreamed of.
“I am looking forward to getting started, and I hope I can have a positive impact on the program and on the players themselves.”
