The out of contract 25-year-old, League 2’s top assist maker last season, has signed a two-year deal at Brunton Park.

The in-demand playmaker is also understood to have held talks with Crewe but has elected to make the move to Cumbria having turned down the offer of a new deal at the Globe Arena.

Devitt starred in both of The Shrimps’ games against Carlisle last season, leading them to make the move for the Dublin-born former Hull youngster.

Carlisle’s head of recruitment Lee Dykes said: “Jamie is a very talented individual who joins us on the back of a successful season on a personal level.

“Jamie was arguably one of the most effective players we faced last year, playing a big part in three of the four goals we conceded against Morecambe.

“He’s a forward-thinking player who can create and score goals which is an area we have looked to strengthen as a priority in this transfer window.

“Jamie can play a number of positions across the top end of the pitch.

“We believe he can play a big part in driving the philosophy of the manager forward and helping us to build on the success we achieved last season.”

Hull’s young player of the year back in the 2007-2008 season, Devitt joined The Shrimps from Chesterfield in the summer of 2014 after a standout loan spell.

He then made 98 appearances for Jim Bentley’s side, scoring 12 goals.

Devitt’s partnership with Shaun Miller, the 16-goal front man also yet to decide on his Shrimps future, led to him picking up three gongs at Morecambe’s end of season awards.

Despite being widely expected to leave, the Irishman made his affection for The Shrimps clear as he weighed up his options.

Speaking back in May, he said: “I’ve been honest with the manager (Jim Bentley) all the way through.

“We’ve had chats where sometimes it looks like I might leave and sometimes it looks like I won’t.

“I’ve loved being here because I feel like I’m a main player which I’ve not had for most of my career.

“The gaffer’s shown loads of trust in me and I can’t thank him and Kenny (McKenna) enough if I’m here next season or not.”
