Carnforth Rangers 1-2 Morecambe XI

Damo Murphy had given the spirited North Lancashire Premier Division side the lead on the half hour but the first year professional struck either side of half-time to hand The Shrimps victory.

With Morecambe manager Jim Bentley and his assistant Ken McKenna looking on Stewart Drummond and Neil Wainwright oversaw a Shrimps side that also included first-team squad members Charlie Bailey, who acted as captain, and Nathan Bondswell.

Trialists Luke Pritchard, who missed a penalty, and goalkeeper Tony Thompson also played 90 minutes with Bentley set to make a decision on the futures of the pair this week.

It was the hosts who caught the eye early on however and they were in front shortly before the half hour, Murphy firing in a low finish across Thompson on 28 minutes.

Kelleher then saw a shot saved one-on-one before Morecambe got the first of two penalties on the night.

Pritchard was tugged back by Ellis Rucastle and the former Preston North End youngster stepped up only to see a weak effort saved by Ben Price.

Rucastle then again upended Pritchard for a second penalty and Kelleher made no mistake from the spot, sending Price the wrong way with the final act of the first half.

The second half at Quarry Park was played in dreadful conditions with Kelleher’s goal 10 minutes after the restart settling the game.

After good work from Pritchard on the left edge of the area the 18-year-old finished well with a first-time shot at the near post.

A young Morecambe team also won 7-2 at Kenny Mayers’ Leyland United on Saturday.

Morgan Homson-Smith scored a hat-trick with Paul Dawson getting two. Steve Yawson and Charlie Bailey were also on target.
