Lancaster City kicked off the new Evo-Stik First Division North season with a 2-1 win at Burscough on Saturday.

A debut goal for AFC Fylde loanee Joe Whittington and a second-half penalty from Ryan Winder ultimately handed the Dolly Blues the three points on the opening day of the new season.

Despite a good first-half performance it looked like a combination of good goalkeeping and some wayward finishing would see City go into the break level.

But the visitors took the lead, deserved on the balance of play, just before the interval.

Linnets stopper Sam Ramsbottom rushed out to clear a ball near the corner flag under pressure from Aaron Taylor, and his poor clearance could only find the feet of Winder near the halfway line.

The midfielder turned and fed debutant Whittington who, 45 yards from goal, curled a low shot past the scrambling Ramsbottom and into the empty net.

The restart showed a resurgence from the hosts, who pinned City in their half in the opening stages.

The equaliser looked increasingly likely and arrived on the hour mark.

Mike Smith held up the ball from a Burscough corner and layed off to Nicholas Ryan in space, the defender finding the net via the inside of the post to level the game.

The deciding goal on 76 minutes came from the penalty spot after Ramsbottom felled Matty Poole in the box.

Winder stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to wrap up the points for the Dolly Blues.

Darren Peacock’s side will look to continue their fine start to the new season in the big Lancashire Derby with Bamber Bridge at Giant Axe on Tuesday night. Kick-off 7.45pm.

Lancaster City: Donlon, Freeland, Hudson, Davis, Marshall (capt), Hunter, Winder, Akrigg, Pearce, Taylor, Whittington. Subs: Poole, Street, Wearing, Parkinson, Gregory.
