Assistant Darrell Clarke has been named as the new Bristol Rovers manager ahead of Morecambe’s visit to the Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates boss John Ward has moved into a Director of Football role with Rovers currently 20th in League 2 and four games without a win after the 3-1 defeat at Fleetwood on Tuesday night.

Chairman Nick Higgs said: “This is something we have had planned for a while, with discussions taking place as far back as last season.

“We believe this is now the right time to make the switch, as we have to plan for next season and try to progress the club forward.

“This gives Darrell time to prepare for the pre-season and think about recruitment for next season.

“Darrell is an enthusiastic and ambitious young man, and he wants to achieve success here.

“We are 100 per cent behind him in his new role, and are confident that he and John will continue to work extremely well together.”

Clarke arrived at the Memorial Stadium in the summer having guided Salisbury City to the Conference via the play-offs.

Ward had returned for his second spell in charge in December 2012 and having taken over with the club second from bottom guided them to a comfortable mid-table finish last season.
