Players don’t have to leave Morecambe to make way for new January signings according to boss Jim Bentley.
The Shrimps boss insists he can pick up loan players on the cheap and is hoping to do just that this month as he looks to give his stretched squad a boost.
Morecambe have picked up just one point from their last three games ahead of Wycombe’s visit to the Globe Arena on Saturday.
Bentley however didn’t rule out ensuring some of his squad get first-team football in order to secure new arrivals and has made defensive reinforcements a priority.
He said: “We’ve had loans in the past that haven’t really cost us anything.
“It’d be great if three players come along and they all cost nothing and then you wouldn’t have to get anyone out on loan.
“But it’s important we do what’s right by the players we’ve got here. Everyone wants to be playing on a Saturday afternoon and one or two of our lads might need to go out on loan and sample that to get the game time.
“I think we’ve been light in defence.
“But if we can get the right player in on the right loan terms we’re always looking to improve every position.
“If we do identify a player who can improve us overall and we can get one or two of our lads out on loan to bring one or two just to freshen it up then we’ll do that.”
Bentley admits he has missed out on a couple of targets already, but is close to extending the contract of one of his players, who he didn’t wish to name until the deal was signed.
He said: “One or two targets I’ve had over the past couple of months have moved on in the first week in January to other places.
“You’ve got to have targets so when you do get the chance to bring someone in you can do it.
“Hopefully we’ll get our chance and we can act nice and swiftly.
“A plus point is one of our players who we’ve been discussing terms with has verbally agreed (to extend his contract) so hopefully it’s a case of dotting the is and crossing the ts and we’ll have good news on that front before the weekend.”
Young Shrimps defender Will Bell has extended his loan at Evo-Stik First Division North club Kendal Town for a further month.
