Jim Bentley believes Morecambe fully deserved their point against Oxford after Robbie Threlfall’s late goal gave them a share of the spoils at the Globe Arena on Saturday.
David Connolly’s 13th-minute strike had looked like settling things for long periods before Threlfall got his shin to Andy Fleming’s corner in stoppage time.
There was some confusion initially as to who had scored the vital goal however.
Bentley said: “I shouted up in the dressing room and I was surprised nobody really claimed it.
“I expected everyone to jump up. It was just one of those where Barry’s (Roche) come up from the back so there’s plenty of bodies around and we’ve loaded the ball in there and had that little bit of luck that we deserve.
“It didn’t look intentional but it’s sneaked in the bottom corner and we’ve got what we deserved.
“I’m a big believer of the harder you work, the luckier you get and to be fair the lads really worked hard today and kept plugging away and got a deserved point.”
After going behind the Shrimps had by far the better of the play in the second half before the late drama which sees them reach 40 points despite going a ninth game without a win.
Bentley said: “It wasn’t going to be pretty with the pitch but both sets of players went at it and after being disappointed to come in behind at half time we did well in the second half.
“The lads who came off the bench affected the game today which is what we expect of them. It’s not about the 11 it’s about the 18.
“We caused problems and we got what we deserved in the end. It’s good to get onto 40 points because 30 to 40 has been an absolute nightmare for us.”
