Bentley: It’s a transitional period for Drummy

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley was full of praise for Stewart Drummond after the Shrimps veteran returned to the starting line-up at Stevenage.

Injuries and coaching commitments mean Drummond has barely featured as a first-team player this season but the Globe great, who turns 39 later this month, showed few signs of rust in the middle of the park at the Lamex Stadium.

Bentley admitted Drummond was in a transition between playing and coaching as he also juggles roles as reserve team manager and Head of Youth.

The Shrimps boss said: “Drummy knows the game, he manages himself and has been playing in the reserves.

“It’s a bit of a transitional period for Stewie. He’s not going to go on forever and we constantly have talks.

“I know what he’s going through doing the reserves and playing in the reserves and it can be difficult.

“It’s part of his development as a coach and he’s doing great with the youth set-up.

“As for his performance on Saturday he showed his experience.

“He sat in the middle of the park and did well.”

Bentley believes the youth set-up headed up by Drummond is showing increasing promise.

He said: “You can see the work is coming to fruition.

“We had (Nathan) Bondswell and (Declan) Watson on the bench (at Stevenage) who have both come through the system and Aaron McGowan got on the pitch as well.

“I think that’ll go from strength to strength.”
