The Shrimps’ victory meant Phil Brown’s side had to settle for the play-offs with Bury promoted to League 1 after a win at Tranmere.

A fine afternoon was capped by Stewart Drummond making his final Shrimps appearance.

Bentley said: “It was brilliant, what an outstanding day.

“It was unfortunate for Southend when they’ve got so much to gain but we owed to ourselves and the other clubs to try and win the game.

“It was a great atmosphere and what a great way to round off a good season at home in front of our fans.

“We deserved to win, played some really good stuff and scored good goals with Stewy Drummond coming on for his last appearance, it doesn’t get better.

“You’re in football for days like this.

“Obviously we want to be where the likes of Southend are but you want to be involved in big occasions and big games.

“The lads have stepped up the plate and played fantastically well to win the game.”
