Morecambe boss Jim Bentley hailed his side’s “complete performance” as they kicked off the season with a 3-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

Three second half goals saw the Shrimps top League 2 at the end of the opening day with Bentley full of praise for a fine team display.

He said: “We’ve got a clean sheet, we created chances and everyone, including the players that came off the bench, affected the game in the right manner.

“I think it was a complete performance for us.

“It’s hard to single anyone out but I love a clean sheet.

“The game plan was carried out to perfection and we knew we had players who could come on and affect the game at the key times like when it got stretched.

“It was absolutely brilliant.”

The Shrimps boss felt his side could have won by an even greater margin as goals from Kevin Ellison, a Padraig Amond penalty and Jack Redshaw handed them victory.

He said: “There wasn’t much in the first half but we started the second half really well.

“We came out of the traps and nearly got in with Alex Kenyon in the box and just kept getting all over them and forcing it.

“We got the free-kick and anywhere around the box you want someone like Kevin Ellison to take it because he knows where the back of the net is and has scored loads like that for us, 19 or 20 yards out and just smashing it with his left foot.

“Goals change games and you could just see that once we got our noses in front the confidence was just oozing.

“We built the momentum and we went from strength to strength and I think we took the wind out of Dagenham’s sails.

“It just swung for us and we kept building on it and got three goals and maybe could have got a couple more.”
